Bangkok is a brilliant place to train Muay Thai, whether you are joining a single class or spending weeks at a gym. Training volume can ramp up quickly, especially in the heat. A recovery massage is a chance to slow down, communicate what is sore and choose a session that suits your actual condition.
Common areas to discuss
- Calves and feet: skipping, footwork and running can leave them heavy.
- Quads, hamstrings and hips: kicks, knees, teeps and repeated stance work add up.
- Shoulders, neck and upper back: pads, guard position and clinch work can create fatigue.
- Lower back: mention it early so pressure and positioning can be adjusted.
Training day or rest day?
After a normal class, a medium or light session can be a relaxing way to finish the day. If you have hard sparring, a fight or two-a-day training planned, lighter work and good sleep may be wiser than a very deep session. On a rest day, you can ask for more focused work while still treating pressure as a conversation.
What to request
A 60- or 90-minute oil massage lets the therapist work across larger muscle groups with controllable pressure. Traditional Thai massage may appeal if you want assisted stretching and mobility. Neither is universally “best”: choose according to what feels good and share your preferred pressure.
“I trained Muay Thai today; my calves and shoulders are tired; medium pressure please” is a clear, useful request. “As hard as possible” is not.
Bruises, shins and real injuries
Avoid deep pressure directly over fresh bruises, swollen shins, a suspected sprain or a painful joint. Stop and seek medical advice for sharp pain, inability to bear weight, increasing swelling, numbness, dizziness, head injury symptoms or pain that feels unlike ordinary training soreness. Massage does not replace an assessment by a clinician or physiotherapist.
