Deep tissue massage usually means slower, more focused work on areas of persistent muscle tension—often the shoulders, upper back, hips, glutes and legs. It does not need to be painful to be firm. In fact, bracing against pressure can make a session less comfortable and less useful.
Deep tissue vs. a strong massage
“Strong” describes pressure. “Deep tissue” describes a more focused approach and may still use moderate pressure. A good therapist checks in, changes angle and pressure, and spends time where it is needed rather than applying the same force everywhere.
| If you feel… | A useful request |
|---|---|
| Desk-related neck and shoulder tightness | Medium-to-firm focus on upper back and shoulders |
| Post-gym fatigue | Targeted medium pressure, adjusted to how recently you trained |
| General stress and poor sleep | Oil massage with medium pressure; relaxation may be more valuable than intensity |
| Sharp or unexplained pain | Medical assessment first—not a deep massage |
How to communicate during the massage
Tell the therapist whether you prefer light, medium or firm pressure at the beginning. Then speak up promptly if it feels too sharp, too hot, numb, tingly or as though you need to hold your breath. “Softer, please” is useful feedback—not a complaint. You can also ask them to spend less time on a sensitive area and more time elsewhere.
Before and after your session
Arrive hydrated, avoid a heavy meal immediately beforehand and give yourself a few minutes afterward before rushing back into Bangkok traffic. Gentle movement, sleep and normal meals support recovery. Temporary tenderness can happen after firm work, but bruising or worsening pain are not goals.
Who should check with a clinician first?
Ask a qualified clinician before deep tissue work if you have recent surgery, a clotting or circulation condition, osteoporosis, a significant medical condition or are pregnant. Do not massage over open skin, an acute injury, severe swelling or suspected infection. Seek medical care for new neurological symptoms, severe pain, chest symptoms or signs of a blood clot.
Book a deep tissue massage in Bangkok
When booking, choose a time that lets you unwind afterward. At the start of the session, explain your focus areas, your recent activity and your preferred pressure. That is how a strong massage becomes a considered one.
